Body Double

Body Double(TM)

Body Double(TM) Advantages: Body Double (TM) allows you to make a mold directly from a live model. You are therefore capturing "first generation" detail from the model vs. second generation detail with the alginate mold process - assuming you want more than one casting.  Not having to make a second production mold from a one-off casting taken from an alginate mold saves valuable time, materials, and money. And being a platinum silicone, you can cast many materials into a Body Double(TM) mold including resins, plasters, low-temperature melt metal alloys etc. - over and over again. Body Double(TM) molds will last for years in your mold library with no shrinkage.

Body Double(TM) Release Cream: Alginates will release body hair easily by virtue of having no tear strength. Being a high-tear strength silicone, Body Double(TM) will not stick to skin, but will encapsulate and mechanically stick to body hair. Many "volunteers" from the Smooth-On sales team found out the hard way by losing swatches of hair from the forearm, that release preparation of some sort is required. In our search for a release agent, we tried a variety of preparations, including skin creams, hair conditioners, petroleum jelly, and combinations of these products. We came up with a skin conditioning blend that releases Body Double(TM) rubber better than any preparation or combination we tried. This cream will not inhibit the rubber.

1. All materials are assembled before beginning   2. Joe's beard poses a possible sticking problem. BD Release Cream is applied thoroughly to the skin and hair.
3. BD can be dispensed directly onto the skin or dispensed into a cup and applied to the skin with a spatula.   4. Make sure to leave a breathing vent either in the mouth or nose. The rubber mold is allowed to cure for 5 minutes.
5. While rubber is curing, plaster bandages are cut to size and immersed in water.   6. Excess water is squeezed from bandages and they are layered over the rubber surface.
7. Plaster bandages are allowed to dry for 15 minutes.   8.The support shell is removed
9. The rubber is carefully removed from the face.   10. You will be amazed at the detail this rubber picks up. You'll see every hair, line, skin marking, etc. Much better than any alginate!
11. SC 325 resin and bronze powder are used to make a casting.   12. Perfect detail reproduction - and unlike alginate, this mold will last for many castings. The total time, start to finish for making the mold, support shell and finished cold-cast bronze casting was about 1 hour.
